Books Trivia

Rudyard Kipling wrote a series of 31 short stories between February 1888 and October 1890.
They were published in various newspapers and journals as he wrote them.
In 1909 the were published (unauthorised by Rudyard Kipling) in a book entitled Abaft the Funnel.
In that book, the final story has a character named Mr Maliphant!
I am fairly sure that we will never know exactly why he picked that name, but there were Maliphants living in London at that time – notably the artist William Maliphant and his mother, so maybe Rudyard Kipling was actually acquainted with a Maliphant.

Full details of the background to the stories and their publication can be seen on the Kipling Society website.
Project Gutenberg (an online library of free eBooks) transcribed the book and you can read it here (or at least the last story, called appropriately “The Last of the Stories”).
