Apparently the name “Maliphant” was used quit a bit in literature in the US.
This snip from the Indianapolis Journal reports it.
Mark also ran across a newspaper novel titled “A Life of Lies” that featured a “Miss Maliphant”.

Bruce researched further and discovered that Margaret Maliphant: A Novel, in Three Volumes was written by the author Alice Vansittart Comyns Carr (née Strettell) in 1889.
